The Malawi Environmental Health Association (MEHA) held its Annual General Meeting (AGM) and Conference on 5th September 2024, at Sunbird Nkopola in Mangochi. The theme for the 2024 AGM conference was “Protecting Everyone’s Health in the New Era”. The AGM brought together Environmental Health Professionals, Stakeholders, and Government Representatives to discuss pressing Public Health issues, share insights, and strategize for the future.
The conference was officially opened by Dr. Samson Mndolo, Secretary for Health, representing the Minister of Health, Hon. Khumbize Kandodo Chiponda. Keynote speakers included Professor Bernard Thole, Director of Malawi Bureau of Standards (MBS), Dr. Neema Kimambo, WHO Country Director, and Mr. Young Samanyika, WASH Lead for Amref Health Africa.
Day one began with a tour of innovative exhibitions from institutions such as WASHTED, NWRA, and Self Help Africa, showcasing practical WASH and energy solutions. WASHTED highlighted the role of plastic waste in disease transmission, while Self Help Africa demonstrated community-centered sanitation technologies.
Scientific presentations followed, with research addressing food safety, non-communicable diseases, plastic pollution, and community health promotion. These sessions fostered critical dialogue and knowledge exchange among Environmental Health stakeholders.
The highlight of the event was the honoring of veteran Environmental Health Professionals including Mr. Ben Mitochi, Mrs. Veronica Nkukumila, Mr. Ketwin Kondowe, and Mr. Aaron Ganizani. This new tradition of annual EHP awards aims to inspire and recognize dedication within the profession.
The meeting was attended by a variety of stakeholders, and some provided financial support as well. Water for people, Self Help Africa, National Water Resources Authority, Evidence Action, CDH Bank, Baker Tilley, Waste Net, Pump Aid, New Dawn sponsored the conference and AGM.
On day two, members participated in the formal AGM session. The MEHA President, Associate Professor Save Kumwenda presented 2024 milestones such as the Zambia learning trip and the launch of the MEHA Women’s Chapter. Updates on the upcoming 2025–2030 strategic plan were shared, and members reviewed the 2023 AGM resolutions.
The 2024 MEHA AGM and Conference was a milestone event that celebrated the profession’s legacy, showcased innovation, and reinforced MEHA’s leadership in Environmental Health. With a renewed sense of purpose, collaboration, and strategy.
